What is Drifting?
Drifting is currently the fastest growing motorsport in the world and this is because of the entertainment value, the whole concept with Drifting is to put on a show for the crowd that contains technical driving, tire smoke, high speeds and very small room for mistakes.
Not even a non car enthusiast can’t deny the entertainment value of this unique sport!
Drifting started out on curvy mountain roads in Japan, where young kids enjoyed skidding their cars through the winding roads. Little did people know that this activity would later evolve to become one of the most challenging forms of motorsport when it comes to car control.
Competitive Drifting - How does it work?
Qualifying
The competitors aim to complete a pre-defined course as laid out by the nominated judges while sticking as closely to the judged criteria as possible, earning points for their proximity to the clipping points, zones, their speed throughout the course and, most important, the amount of style with which they do so. Slow drifting with a lack of commitment will get marked down – fast, balls out drifting will rack up the points!
If a driver manages to put down the perfect run out on the track he will be given 100 points, but every mistake he does out on track will cause a deduction to his score. These mistakes are closely being watched by 3 judges who all have different things to keep track of.
Judge nr 1 will look at overall Style (Commitment, Speed & overall look)
Judge nr 2 will look at Line (Line through the track, Clipping points and Zones)
Judge nr 3 will look at Angle (The amount of Angle you hold through the course, Transistions and Smoothness)
Elimination - Twin Drifting
This is done in a bracket similar to Dragracing, the most competitions are run in a 32 car bracket where the highest qualifier faces the lowest qualifier and so on. It is during this section where the real show begins which has caught the attention of millions of people.
Lead Run
The one who qualified highest goes out as leadcar in the first run, the leadcars job is to put down a perfect qualifying run and give room to the chase car to be able to chase closely.
The chase cars job is to mirror the Leadcars line, angle and speed while keeping a really tight proximity without disrupting the leadcars run.
Chase Run
After the first run you change place and the leadcar becomes chasecar instead, then the judges compare the first drivers Lead run against the other drivers leadrun and chase run against chase run. Then they try to decide who did it better, if its to close and they cant decide who was better they can call a “one more time” which means they will restart the battle and try to make a decision on the second run instead.
This then continues through out the whole Top 32 bracket down to Top 16 to Top 8 to Top 4 and then the finals.
